Danceblast was originally set up by Anne and Phyllis in November 1997 and was known then as The Bristol Rocktap Workshop. At the time Anne was teaching adults tap dancing set to Rock & Roll music. Rocktap as it became known was originally based at St Francis Church Hall, round the corner from the Tobacco Factory.

Our first show took place at Q.E.H Theatre and was called Danceblast. At the time there were only 76 students in the school.

Our second show took place in 2000 and was called Danceblast 2000.

The third show was our most ambitious to date. It was our own version of the Nutcracker. We used all of Tchaikovsky's music although it was synthesised. In our version Clara was a stroppy teenager addicted to her mobile phone. We renamed it The Nutrocker.

The fourth show included the introduction of the Band, who for this year were known as Status Crow. This show was our first musical. Written by Anne, it was called King of Birds. We had a number of technical problems with this show because we hadn't really taken on board the fact that the students who were not using microphones would not be heard over the band. This problem was to be solved the following year by adding singers to the band.
